Either works for a handful of clients, and both are on the free plans. Claude's free plan allows up to 5 Projects; ChatGPT lists Projects on every plan, including Free. Choose Claude if most of your work is long-form editing and you want project knowledge that scales on paid plans. Choose ChatGPT if your team already lives there. The catch is the same in both: a Project only knows the files you upload, so every new post means another upload. If your clients publish on Instagram, YouTube, a website or a newsletter, byline reads those channels and serves the voice to both.

How do you set up one Project per client?
The same six steps work in Claude and in ChatGPT. Screenshots of each step in both products are taken on publish day. This draft does not invent them.
- Name the Project after the client in both Claude and ChatGPT.
- Paste a one-page voice brief into the Project instructions in both Claude and ChatGPT.
- Upload 10–20 recent posts as a single file in both Claude and ChatGPT.
- Add banned words and spellings to the instructions in both Claude and ChatGPT.
- Test with one known post rewritten in both Claude and ChatGPT.
- Keep a last-updated note in the instructions in both Claude and ChatGPT.
Where do Projects break down for ghostwriters?
You upload again every time the client publishes. Claude project sharing is Team and Enterprise only. One voice doc drifts from what the client actually posts. Switching among 5 or more client Projects is the practical limit, even when the plan allows more. On 28 Oct, OpenAI and Anthropic did not publish a paid-plan Project cap that this page could confirm, so any higher cap is unverified.
What is happening to Claude Styles?
Claude is moving custom Styles into Skills. Migrated styles are off by default. You turn them on under Customize, then Skills, and call one with a slash command. Per the Claude Help Center, verify this on publish day. The live help page did not load when this draft was written on 28 Oct 2026, so this section stays only if that page confirms it.
When is a Project enough?
Fewer than 5 clients who hand you a voice doc: use a free Claude Project per client. You do not need byline.
Clients whose voice lives in Instagram captions, YouTube videos or a newsletter, and who publish weekly: the upkeep is the problem, not the model. That is where byline fits.
Clients who only publish on LinkedIn: byline cannot read LinkedIn yet. Use Projects, or a LinkedIn-native tool.
How does byline work with either?
byline reads the connected channels and serves the voice over MCP. In Claude, custom connectors need Pro or Max. Claude Free does not include them. On a Team workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner sets them up. In ChatGPT, custom connections need Business, Enterprise or Edu. Pro has a narrower read and fetch connection, and Plus does not include it.
byline reads connected Instagram, what is said in YouTube videos, websites and newsletters. It does not import LinkedIn or TikTok yet, and it does not read comments. The profile refreshes overnight from newly processed work. Studio is $0.99 for the first eligible month, then $99 a month for 5 workspaces with 5 seats each. Creator is $0.99 then $29 a month. There is no free trial.
FAQ
Is Claude Projects or ChatGPT Projects better for keeping a client's voice?
Both keep a voice doc and examples next to your chats. Claude is a good fit for long-form editing, and its project knowledge scales on paid plans. ChatGPT is the easier choice if your team already works there. Neither updates itself when the client publishes something new.
Are Claude Projects free?
Yes. Claude's free plan lets you create up to five Projects. Paid plans add retrieval for large project knowledge, and Team and Enterprise add sharing.
Are ChatGPT Projects free?
OpenAI's plan comparison lists Projects on Free, Go, Plus and Pro (checked 28 Oct 2026).
How many clients can I manage with Projects?
On Claude's free plan, five. On paid plans, OpenAI and Anthropic don't publish a Project limit that we could confirm on 28 Oct 2026. The practical limit is upkeep: each Project needs fresh examples as the client publishes.
What happened to Claude Styles?
Claude is moving custom Styles into Skills. Migrated styles are off by default; you turn them on under Customize > Skills and call one with a slash command. (Re-check this answer on publish day.)
Can byline work with Claude Projects or ChatGPT?
Yes, over MCP. In Claude you need Pro or Max for custom connectors. In ChatGPT you need Business, Enterprise or Edu; Pro has a narrower read and fetch connection, and Plus doesn't include it.
Does byline read LinkedIn posts?
Not yet. It reads connected Instagram, YouTube (including what's said in videos), websites and newsletters forwarded by email.
